Choose the wrong base and you'll be stuck in traffic or bored stiff. Here's how to pick the right neighbourhood.
Picking your base in Malta is the single most important decision you'll make before the trip. Malta is small — but every area has a completely different character. Here's the honest breakdown.
This is the beating heart of tourist Malta. Hotels, bars, shops, a seafront promenade, and the notorious nightlife district of Paceville. It's loud, busy, and more expensive than the rest of the island.
The capital — compact, beautiful, and full of atmosphere. Sleeping in a 16th-century Baroque townhouse is an experience in itself. Pricier than Sliema, but more characterful.
A large resort town in the north. Less picturesque, but cheaper and close to Malta's sandy beaches — Mellieħa Bay is nearby.
A quiet hill town in the north, close to Malta's longest sandy beach (Mellieħa Bay). A good base if beaches and peace are your priorities.
A completely different world. Quieter, greener, slower. Farmhouses (traditional Maltese countryside houses) with a private pool are the absolute highlight. Perfect for 2–3 nights after the buzz of Malta.
