Seafront promenade, shopping, restaurants and the best views of Valletta — everything about Sliema
Sliema (pronounced Slee-ma) is Malta's most cosmopolitan town — the place where the island's modern life unfolds. Stretching along a rocky seafront opposite Valletta, it's lined with cafés, restaurants, international shops, and some of the best views of the capital. No wonder most tourists base themselves here.
Sliema is where Malta meets the 21st century. It's home to expats, young professionals, and the majority of Malta's tourist accommodation. The Strand — the main seafront promenade — runs for about 2.5 km with continuous views across to Valletta, especially striking at sunset when the city turns gold.
There are no sandy beaches here. Sliema is all rock — but this isn't a problem. Swimming platforms with ladders dot the coastline, and the water is crystal clear Mediterranean blue.
From Tigne Point to the Ferry Landing — a 2.5 km flat walk with sea on one side and cafés on the other. Do it morning for quiet, sunset for photos, and evening for the illuminated Valletta skyline.
A modern retail complex on the site of a former Victorian-era fort. H&M, Zara, a supermarket, restaurants with sea views. Good for essentials, souvenirs, or escape from the afternoon heat.
Position yourself at Tigne Point or on the promenade — the view of Valletta glowing orange at sunset is one of Malta's most photographed moments.
The ferry landing is the departure point for ferries to Valletta (€1.50, 10 min), Three Cities, and organised boat trips to Blue Grotto, Blue Lagoon, and along Malta's coastline.
Surf & Turf — steak and seafood with sea views Peppino's Wine & Bistro — excellent for wine lovers The Exiles — local pub, cheap beer, unpretentious Hugo's Lounge — good coffee and brunch vibe Fontanella Wind & Sea — casual lunches on a terrace
Prices are higher than Valletta or Rabat but lower than St Julian's. Expect €15–25 for a main course at a mid-range place.
Sliema has Malta's widest range of accommodation. Premium: Preluna Hotel & Spa and Victoria Hotel. Mid-range: boutique hotels and apartments throughout. Budget: many Airbnb studios from €60–90/night in high season.
Best base for: families, couples, first-time visitors who want easy access to everything.
Sliema: modern, convenient, promenade — best all-rounder Valletta: historic, boutique, car-free — best for culture lovers St Julian's: young, loud, beaches and nightlife — best for groups and 20-somethings
For a first visit: Sliema or Valletta. You won't go wrong with either.
