An entire UNESCO World Heritage city. One square kilometre packed with history, gold, and extraordinary views.
Valletta is one of the smallest capitals in the European Union — roughly 1 square kilometre. But it may be the most historically dense city on earth. The grid of streets built by the Knights of Malta in the 16th century stands almost completely unchanged today.
Put the map away. Valletta is a regular grid — you cannot get truly lost, and eventually every street leads to the sea. Republic Street is the main artery full of shops and tourists. Turn into the side streets — that is where real life happens.
Arrive via the Barrakka Lift from the ferry terminal (€1 going up, walk down for free). At the top: Upper Barrakka Gardens with views over Grand Harbour — one of the most beautiful views in Europe.
Valletta is hilly — be prepared for uphill walking. Driving is restricted and expensive — arrive by bus or ferry. Shops close early (around 6–7 pm).
