June: 22°C. August: 26°C. October: 24°C still. Malta has swimmable water for seven months — here's when each month feels like.
The Mediterranean around Malta benefits from southerly warm currents and high sun exposure, making it one of the warmest sea destinations in Europe across an extended season. You can swim comfortably from June through November — that's seven months.
| Month | Sea Temp | Swimming Assessment | |-------|----------|---------------------| | January | 15–16°C | Very cold — wetsuits only | | February | 14–15°C | Coldest month of the year | | March | 15–16°C | Still too cold for casual swimming | | April | 16–17°C | Brave swimmers only | | May | 18–20°C | Refreshing but manageable | | June | 21–23°C | Pleasant — season begins | | July | 24–26°C | Warm and comfortable | | August | 26–28°C | Peak warmth — like a bath | | September | 25–27°C | Still excellent | | October | 22–25°C | Surprisingly warm, far fewer tourists | | November | 20–22°C | Still possible for enthusiasts | | December | 17–19°C | Die-hards only |
July–August: Warmest water, but also peak crowds and prices. Book accommodation months in advance.
June and September: The sweet spot — warm water, fewer tourists, bearable air temperatures. September is often considered the best month overall.
October: Malta's best-kept secret. Water temperatures remain 22–25°C (the sea cools slowly — the mass of warm water built over summer persists). Air temperature drops to around 22–24°C. Hotel prices fall 30–50%. This is when repeat visitors tend to come back.
October in Malta: warm sea, half the crowds, lower prices, golden light. The people who've been before know about this.
June–August: Golden Bay or Paradise Bay (sandy, easy entry). Arrive before 10am for space.
September–October: Gnejna Bay or Ghajn Tuffieha — smaller, more beautiful, far fewer people than Golden Bay.
Year-round (brave/enthusiasts): Sliema rocky waterfront or St George's Bay. No beach organisation needed — you simply dive from the rock.
The optimal swimming feel comes when water temperature is a few degrees warmer than air temperature. In Malta:
This is why October is often a more enjoyable swimming experience than August, despite slightly cooler water — you enter the water without shock and the overall feel is pleasant rather than intense.
