3 days is just enough to see Malta's highlights. This day-by-day plan covers Valletta, Mdina, Three Cities, a beach and Comino — no time wasted.
After living in Malta for 3 years, I've hosted countless friends and family, helping them make the most of short visits. Here's my tried-and-tested 3-day itinerary that covers the island's highlights while avoiding tourist traps.
Start your Malta adventure in Valletta, the fortress capital built by the Knights of St. John. Arrive by 8:45 AM to beat the crowds at St. John's Co-Cathedral (€15 entrance). The austere exterior hides an explosively baroque interior and houses Caravaggio's masterpiece "The Beheading of St. John."
For an authentic Maltese lunch, choose between:
Take the traditional water taxi (€3) across the Grand Harbor to Birgu (Vittoriosa). The crossing offers spectacular views of Valletta's bastions.
Return to Valletta for sunset drinks at Bridge Bar (live jazz on Fridays) or Café Society, followed by dinner at Harbour Club with Grand Harbor views.
Take Bus 52 from Valletta to Mdina (45 minutes). Arrive early to experience the medieval silence before tour groups.
Walk to neighboring Rabat to explore St. Paul's Catacombs (€5), then enjoy a traditional ftira at Crystal Palace (known locally as 'Is-Serkin').
Choose between two southern highlights:
Head to St. Julian's for dinner at Piccolo Padre (waterfront pizza) or Barracuda (high-end seafood). Follow with drinks in Paceville if you're feeling energetic.
Comino and Blue Lagoon: Take the early ferry (before 9 AM) from either Cirkewwa or Sliema (€20-35 return). Pro tip: walk 10 minutes to Crystal Lagoon for equally beautiful waters and fewer crowds.
Explore Malta's northern highlights:
Base yourself in Sliema or St. Julian's for best transport connections and restaurant options. Avoid Paceville if you're sensitive to night noise.
This itinerary gives you a perfect mix of history, culture, and seaside relaxation. Remember, Malta's charm lies in its unhurried pace - don't try to pack in too much. Leave time for unexpected discoveries and lengthy Mediterranean lunches!
