The biggest dilemma for Polish tourists in Malta. Here's what hundreds of people who've done both say.
If there's one question that appears in every Polish travel forum thread about Malta, it's this: Should I do Gozo with a guided tour or on my own? Here's what people who've actually been there say.
Supporters of organised tours have one killer argument: you'll see things you'll never find on your own.
"You won't see what they can show you. Going on your own is difficult. I've done it both ways — there's no comparison. Only with a guide!"
"The main highlights of Malta you can easily do alone. Gozo is the exception — a guided tour is best."
Arguments for a guided tour:
On the other side stands an equally strong camp — mainly those who value freedom and their own pace.
"On Gozo I'd definitely recommend a car. You go where you want, when you want — if you spot a nice view, you just stop."
"If there are more than 2 of you, Gozo on your own is definitely the better option. All the main points are accessible to anyone. You walk at your own pace, nobody's hurrying you. Total car cost ~€80 — the same as one person on a tour."
Arguments for DIY:
One of the most interesting responses in these threads comes from someone who knows Gozo inside out:
"Gozo is primarily about nature and people. You knock on the door of a private house, an elderly man opens it and politely lets you into his cellar — a cave discovered by his grandfather over a hundred years ago. That's the real atmosphere. But it takes time."
And with characteristic honesty: "If you need a hundred Instagram photos, a day trip with one of the operators will do the job — you'll pop in for fifteen minutes at Tal-Mixta cave, take a selfie and move on."
First time on Gozo = guided tour. You'll see the key highlights, get historical context, and won't have to stress about logistics. Polish-speaking operators dominate the recommendations.
Return visit = on your own. Hire a car (~€80 for the day), get a map and go where you feel. Nobody's waiting for you.

Maklowicz's tip: rest at Upper Barrakka
“Rozsądny zwiedzający powinien co jakiś czas przycupnąć, a do tego przycupnięcia wybierać miejsca, w których siedząc również można zwiedzać.”
The essential pastizzi experience
“Pastizzi to najprostsze i najbardziej demokratyczne danie na Malcie — za pięćdziesiąt centów jesteś w raju.”
