Gozo tastes different from Malta. Rabbit in wine, oven-fresh ftira, wine from family producers. Here's what to eat and where.
Malta means fast food by the harbour and overpriced restaurants in Valletta. Gozo? Gozo means a local farmhouse kitchen with rabbit stew, wine from family vineyards and ftira fresh from the oven. Food on Gozo is a genuine experience — and Polish tourists have discovered it.
If you want to experience Gozo not just through your eyes but through your taste buds, there's one operator who does it best: Gozo od Kuchni (Gozo from the Kitchen) with guide Beatka. Small groups, tastings woven into sightseeing, authentic Maltese flavours without the tourist trappings.
"If you're doing a Gozo tour, I wholeheartedly recommend Gozo od Kuchni. We decided at the last minute and they organised a wonderful trip in a beautifully intimate group. We felt looked after at every step. Lovely Beatka drove us around the most beautiful corners of Gozo, making the time fly with fascinating stories."
What sets Gozo od Kuchni apart:
€15 for 2 courses and unlimited wine. You'd pay more for just a bowl of soup in Poland. Most participants describe this lunch as one of the best meals of their Malta holiday.
Included in the full-day tour price (€65 adult, €45 child): choice of fish, Maltese rabbit, seafood or salmon pasta, and salads. Plus mineral water.
Malta's national dish. Rabbit slow-braised in wine, garlic and herbs — served with chips or potatoes. Found in almost every local restaurant on Gozo. There's nothing quite like it in other cuisines — it's a must-try.
Maltese flatbread pizza — round, crispy bread topped with olives, capers, tomatoes and tuna. On Gozo, ftira from a local bakery is a different class from the supermarket version.
Flaky pastry filled with ricotta or mushy peas — street food for pennies (about €0.50–1). Perfect quick snack between sights. On Gozo, best from the market in Victoria.
Gozo produces its own wine, mainly from white grape varieties. Wine from small family producers is a completely different quality from the supermarket bottles. The Gozo od Kuchni tour includes a visit to a local producer.
Lampuki is a seasonal speciality available September to November. Grilled with capers and lemon. Outside the season it's harder to find, but worth asking for.
