Two adjacent beaches in NW Malta — Golden Bay for amenities, Ghajn Tuffieha for wild beauty. Transport, crowds, best time to visit, and what's nearby.
If you're dreaming of golden sand between your toes in Malta, head straight to the island's northwestern coast. Golden Bay and its wilder sister Ghajn Tuffieha (pronounced "ain too-fee-ha") are Malta's premier sandy beaches, offering crystal-clear waters and stunning sunset views that will make your Instagram followers jealous.
While Malta is blessed with numerous swimming spots, most of its beaches are rocky or pebbly. Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha stand out as two of the few genuine sandy beaches on the main island. Their sheltered location and golden sand make them perfect for both families and adventure seekers.
Golden Bay is the more developed and accessible of the two beaches. The approximately 200-meter stretch of sand offers everything you need for a comfortable beach day:
Pro tip: Arrive before 10:30 AM during July and August if you want to secure a good spot. The beach gets particularly crowded on summer weekends when locals join the tourists.
Just a 10-minute walk around the headland lies Ghajn Tuffieha, my personal favorite. This beach offers a more natural, less commercialized experience:
Important note: Access requires descending (and later ascending) over 200 steps. While this deters some visitors, it's what keeps the beach relatively peaceful. Skip this beach if you're visiting with small children, elderly people, or heavy beach equipment.
Both beaches are well-connected to Malta's main tourist areas:
For the optimal experience, I recommend visiting during:
Make the most of your trip by combining your beach visit with:
Final advice: If you can't decide between the two beaches, start your day at Golden Bay and walk to Ghajn Tuffieha later for sunset. The connecting coastal path offers beautiful views and perfect photo opportunities.
