Visible from Valletta, standing on Birgu's promontory. One of the most significant fortresses in European history and one of Malta's finest preserved sites.
Standing at Upper Barrakka in Valletta and looking across Grand Harbour, you can see it opposite. A great stone mass on the promontory of Birgu — Fort Saint Angelo. If Valletta is Malta's shield, this fort is its sword. And for 500 years it was exactly that.
Ticket approx. €10 (Heritage Malta). Access: Dghajsa boat from Valletta (€2) or by bus. The fort is fully accessible to visitors.
Highlights from Robert Maklowicz's travels
