Maklowicz discovers the fortress where the Knights of Malta actually lived before building Valletta
When Maklowicz reaches Birgu, he says: "Birgu is where the Knights of Malta actually lived — before they built Valletta." Fort St Angelo on the tip of Birgu is where the Maltese knightly saga began.
The Fort's hill has been inhabited since Phoenician times. The Arabs built a castle here, the knights rebuilt it into a mighty fortress. During the Great Siege of 1565, the fort was the last line of defence — and it did not fall.
Birgu (Vittoriosa) is the oldest of the Three Cities. Narrow streets with stone houses, colourful balconies, local bars. The Inquisitor's Palace is another gem — the Inquisition in Malta lasted from 1574 to 1798.
Getting there: Water taxi from Valletta (€1.50, 5 minutes) — the most beautiful way to arrive.
