In most countries, rabbits are cute fluffy pets. In Malta, they are a national obsession on a plate. Fenek (rabbit) is more than food; it's cultural heritage.
Historically, the Knights of Malta banned locals from hunting rabbits (keeping the fun for themselves). When the French kicked the Knights out, the Maltese started hunting and eating rabbits en masse as a celebration of freedom. That's right, eating rabbit is an act of rebellion.
