The Mediterranean's most famous turquoise lagoon — timing and planning advice to make the most of it without the crowds.
Blue Lagoon is a shallow lagoon between the tiny island of Comino and the even smaller Cominotto — with some of the most extraordinary turquoise-blue water in the Mediterranean. The colour is almost unrealistically vivid: warm (0.5–3m deep), completely clear (you can see the bottom), calm — ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The problem? Everyone knows this. In summer, thousands of tourists arrive daily. It can be solved with planning. Here's how.
Best months: May–June and September–October. Water warm (23–26°C), 80% fewer crowds, lower boat prices.
July–August: Extreme crowds. If you must go in this period — take the first boat at 8am. Manageable until 11am, chaotic by noon.
April: A little cold for swimming (19°C), but almost empty and beautiful. Good for photos.
November–March: Off-season. Comino is nearly deserted — extraordinary experience, but no facilities.
The closest point — Cirkewwa is the northern tip of Malta. Many operators run direct boats to Blue Lagoon.
Price: €10–15 return. Time: 15–20 minutes. Bus 221 from Valletta to Cirkewwa (around 1 hour, €2) or Bolt (€25–35).
Full-day boat trips from the tourist centre — depart in the morning, 3–4 hours at Blue Lagoon, often with a stop at Crystal Lagoon or Gozo.
Price: €20–35. Pro: transport from the centre, bar on board, sociable atmosphere. Con: locks in your whole day.
Private motorboat for a group: €100–200/day. Total freedom — choose your hours, explore other Comino coves (Crystal Lagoon, Santa Marija Bay).
Crystal Lagoon: A small cove on the eastern side of the island. Quieter than Blue Lagoon, equally beautiful water. Almost unknown to tourists.
Santa Marija Bay: The only sandy beach on Comino. Peaceful, less visited.
Santa Marija Tower (16th century): Historic watchtower on Comino's hilltop. 20 minutes' walk from Blue Lagoon, panoramic view.
If it's your only visit and you want "that turquoise water" — Blue Lagoon is the icon, you should see it. But if you want a quieter swim somewhere beautiful without the crowds, Ramla Bay on Gozo is better for 90% of the season. My view: Ramla Bay on a weekday beats Blue Lagoon on a summer weekend, every time.
