Left-hand traffic, narrow roads, deposits, local hire companies and parking in Valletta. What tourists actually say when they get back.
Before visiting, Malta travel groups are full of warnings about roads "like in Fast & Furious". What do tourists actually say when they get back?
"I'd read all about how narrow Maltese roads are and how drivers go wild. Honestly? Yes, roads are sometimes rough, but it's manageable. On Gozo I'd definitely recommend a car."
"We hired a car — it was definitely the best decision." (written after returning)
For a week-long stay in Sliema or Valletta: Tallinja buses + Bolt are more than enough. Parking in the centre is a nightmare (Valletta — paid zone almost 24 hours, Sliema — very few spaces). Driving to Valletta is a recipe for frustration.
When a car is worthwhile in Malta: south of the island (Marsaxlokk, Dingli Cliffs, Blue Grotto, Ħaġar Qim), staying outside the main towns, exploring villages off the beaten track.
Buses run once an hour, stops are far from the attractions. A car opens up the island in a completely different way.
"For more than 2 people, Gozo on your own is the way to go. You walk at your own pace, nobody's rushing you. ~€80 for the car — the same as one person on a guided tour."
Prices: Small class from ~€40/day (low season) to ~€80/day (peak season). Full insurance (recommended!) adds €15–20/day.
Recommended companies:
Most hire companies block a deposit on a credit card — usually €300–1,000. Make sure you have the available credit limit. Debit cards are not always accepted.
Valletta: paid zone almost all day, multi-storey car parks at the city entrance. Don't drive into central Valletta — it's not worth it. Park outside and take the ferry (€1.50).
Sliema: street parking is hard to find in season. Try the car park near Tagliaferro Tower or along the promenade.

Taking the ferry to Gozo
“Płyniemy na Gozo. Nie jest to specjalnie wycieńczający rejs, bo trwa około 25 minut.”
