The Knights lived here before they built Valletta. 16th-century streets, Fort St. Angelo and almost no tourists. Malta's hidden gem.
Birgu (officially Vittoriosa) is the oldest of the Three Cities and one of the most beautiful places on Malta that most tourists never discover. While everyone queues for the Co-Cathedral in Valletta, you can wander here almost alone.
This is where the Knights of Malta lived and defended themselves during their first decades on the island — before Valletta was built. It is from here that they fought the Great Siege of 1565. Every stone here has a story.
Because real Maltese life still happens here. The streets are narrow, flowerpots spill out of windows, laundry hangs overhead, neighbours talk through open doorways. This is what Malta looked like 50 years ago — and it still looks like that here.
Most beautifully: by Dghajsa boat from Valletta (€2, a few minutes). You arrive right at the Birgu waterfront. You can also take a bus or Bolt.

Maklowicz discovers Birgu
“Birgu to miejsce, gdzie rycerze maltańscy naprawdę mieszkali — zanim zbudowali Vallettę.”
